What Is HOYA Meiryo Control? The Clearest, Toughest, Easiest-to-Clean Lens Coating

Have you ever had new glasses that started showing fine "hairline" scratches after a short time, smudges that just won't wipe off, or annoying flashes of reflected light on your lenses while driving at night?
Most of these problems don't come from the lens itself, but from the lens coating: the ultra-thin layers on both surfaces of the lens that decide how clear, durable and easy to clean your glasses will be.
In this article, GALAXY BY OPTOMETRIST introduces Meiryo Control, HOYA's most premium lens coating, in plain language but with all the key facts.
30-second summary ✔ HOYA's clearest, toughest and easiest-to-clean lens coating ✔ 56% less reflection, easy-clean performance that lasts 5× longer, 2.5× more scratch resistant ✔ Reduces blue light, inhibits bacteria and blocks 100% of UV
What is Meiryo Control?
Meiryo (明瞭) is Japanese for "clarity".
HOYA built on its long-developed Hi-Vision coating to create Hi-Vision Meiryo, which HOYA describes as the clearest, most durable and longest-lasting lens coating it has ever made. Meiryo Control combines Hi-Vision Meiryo with several other eye-protection technologies in a single lens.

Meiryo Control = 5 technologies in one lens

Hi-Vision Meiryo: nano anti-reflective layers plus an extra-hard scratch-resistant layer for clear, durable vision.
EYBLU: a lens material that reduces blue light in the 380–440 nm range, the range that may be harmful to the eyes, by up to 69%*.
UV Protection: blocks 100% of UV, both from the front and reflected in from the back of the lens.
Hi-Vision Anti-Bacterial: inhibits the growth of bacteria on the lens surface by more than 99.9%*.
STX (Smooth Touch Xtreme): an extra-slick surface that repels water, oil and fingerprints, and wipes clean easily.

What's inside the lens?
A Meiryo Control lens doesn't have just one coating, but many stacked layers, each with its own job, and the same coating stack is applied to both the front and back of the lens.

STX water & smudge repellent layer: the outermost surface, so water, oil and dust don't stick.
Anti-bacterial layer: reduces the build-up of germs on the lens surface.
Anti-static layer: stops dust from being attracted to the lens.
Hi-Vision Meiryo nano anti-reflective layers: the heart of the clarity.
Extra-hard layer: protects the lens from scratches.
EYBLU lens material and UV filter layer: in the middle, reducing blue light and filtering UV.
All layers are designed to work together. If one layer is weak, the others peel or wear out faster too.
The numbers that show Meiryo leads
HOYA tested Hi-Vision Meiryo against the best coatings from major competitors. The results:

56% less reflection: clearer, sharper vision and less glare when driving at night or looking at screens.
Easy-clean performance lasts 5× longer: glasses stay easy to wipe even after long use.
2.5× more scratch resistant: lenses stay clear and attractive for longer.
Up to 69% blue-light reduction at 380–440 nm (EYBLU 1.60 lenses)
More than 99.9% reduction of bacteria on the lens surface
100% UV protection on both the front and back

How does HOYA test durability?

HOYA developed its own test suite, the LongLife Index (LLI), designed to mimic real-life wear. HOYA states it is stricter than common industry standards. It consists of 5 tests:

Droplet test: lenses are wiped up to 5,000 times with lens tissue, which is rougher than a normal glasses cloth, and checked every 500 wipes to see if the surface still repels water.
Sandpit test: lenses are shaken in gravel 800 times, then their remaining clarity is measured.
Steel wool test: the lens surface is rubbed with steel wool under loads of up to 2.5 kg, then checked for scratches.
Oven test: the temperature is raised until the coating starts to crack. The pass mark is 95°C, hotter than a car parked in the sun.
Extreme weather test: lenses are exposed to alternating UV, heat and humidity for 4 weeks, and at least 90% of the coating must remain to pass.
Overall result: Hi-Vision Meiryo scored 104.3 on the LongLife Index, 45% higher than the best competitor coating (which scored 71.8). More than 90% of the coating remained after the full 4-week weather test, while most competitors began peeling in the first week, and it had the highest heat resistance of the coatings tested.
Why does long-lasting easy cleaning matter?
To check whether a lens surface still repels water and smudges, you look at the water droplet contact angle. If droplets stay round (an angle above 100°), the surface is still slick, smudges don't stick and they wipe off easily. If droplets spread flat, the coating is wearing out, smudges cling and lenses are hard to clean.

In repeated wiping tests, most competitor coatings became hard to clean within the first 500 wipes. One lasted 1,000 wipes and the best lasted 2,000. Hi-Vision Meiryo completed all 5,000 wipes with the droplet angle still at 101°.
Think about it: if you wipe your glasses 10–20 times per clean, twice a day, that's 7,300–14,600 wipes a year, and most people keep a pair of glasses for 1–3 years. A coating that stays easy to clean keeps your glasses clear for their whole life.
Meiryo Control also features the new STX (Smooth Touch Xtreme) coating, which repels water, oil and fingerprints better than the previous generation and keeps its initial performance even after 8,000 simulated wipes.
How is Meiryo Control different from other HOYA coatings?

Meiryo: for clear, natural-colour lenses for everyday use, when you also want photochromic or tinted lenses.
Full Control: for heavy screen users who want blue-light protection (Blue Control 440–460 nm) and photochromic lenses.
Meiryo Control: for the clearest, most natural lenses with complete protection (EYBLU 380–440 nm) that are the easiest to clean.
Note: Meiryo Control is not available in photochromic or tinted lenses. If you need these lens types, our optometrists will recommend the right coating for you.
Who is Meiryo Control for?
People who wear glasses all day and clean them often
People who use computers, phones or screens for long periods
People who drive at night and are bothered by lens reflections
People who spend time outdoors and want UV protection
People who care about the hygiene of glasses that touch their face every day
People who want clear, natural-colour lenses that last
Tips to keep your lenses clear for longer
Rinse lenses with clean water before wiping to remove dust and grit.
Wipe with a clean microfibre cloth, not your shirt or tissue paper.
Put your glasses down lenses-up, or keep them in their case.
Don't leave your glasses in a car parked in the sun for long periods.
